School Group joins project to control the Asian wasp

The Aver-o-Mar School Group is collaborating with the Local Civil Protection Service (SMPC) on a project to control the Asian Wasp in the The city premisses, in line with the guidelines of the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) and the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV).

In addition to destroying nests, the SMPC has provided the ICNF with data on the spread of this invasive species in the city premisses, via the STOPwasp application (https://stopvespa.icnf.pt).

Following on from the work that has been carried out, the SMPC is carrying out information actions in schools and workshops on the construction of selective traps for catching the Asian wasp. Two sessions were held at Aver-o-Mar School on 6 and 7 May, involving the 6th A, 5th D and 5th F classes, under the internal guidance of Prof. Filipe Santos and coordinated by SMPC technicians.

The aim of the ‘Combating the Wasp’ project is to build an active surveillance network by installing food bait traps, involving students from the city’s schools in the project. The results will make it possible to identify priority areas for the early tracking of primary nests and/or nests in the early stages of construction.

As part of the project, each participating pupil, if authorised by their guardian, will build and install a selective trap on their balcony / garden, which will be monitored in a few days’ time.
